Blessing of Easter Baskets – Bangor
One of the most beloved traditions in eastern European countries, Święconka, will be renewed with the blessing of Easter baskets at St. Mary Church on 768 Ohio Street in Bangor on Holy Saturday, April 4, at 9 a.m.
A priest will bless the baskets which are filled with symbolic foods that will be eaten on Easter. The linen and food items are chosen for the ways in which they remind us of the mysteries of the Lord’s Passion, death, and resurrection.
Some of the traditional foods that are included in the baskets are: bread, butter, horseradish, hard-cooked eggs, meat (sausage, ham, lamb, bacon), salt, and cheese. The baskets are then decorated with items such as ribbons, greenery, dried flowers, and a white cloth symbolizing Christ’s burial shroud.
Each basket can be different, and participants are encouraged to decorate and have fun with it! Bring your blessed Easter basket home, and enjoy the food on Easter Sunday.
